There have been major changes in the North-west European sea region in recent years. It has been transformed from a region comprising coastal states each with a narrow boundary of Territorial Sea, beyond which was the High Sea, to one of wide national maritime zones extending from each of the coastal states. In some cases these zones encompass areas of sea and continental shelf far greater than the national land areas. They constitute the 'marine estate' and their boundaries need to be clearly identified and their space and resources sensibly administered. This paper provides an outline of the principal and possible divisionsof the UK marine estate and considers some of the implications of the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention for defining the outer limits and boundaries of the UK marine estate with regard to other states in the region. The paper concentrates primarily on the zones of national jurisdiction but refers briefly to some of the wider implications for the UK of being or not being a party to the 1982 Convention
