The centenary of the publication of Richard Ford's 'Hand-book for travellers i Spain' must not be allowed to pass without some account of the man and his book, rightly classed by Sir William Stirling-Maxwell as among the best books of travel, humour and history, social, literary, political and artistic, in the English language. x It is especially appropriate that Richard Ford's achievement should be remembered in the Geographical Journal as he was for some years a Fellow of the Society.2 After the end of the Napoleonic wars an annually increasing number of British tourists visited the continent, but very few adequate English guidebooks were then available to assist these travellers.
