The publication of preliminary census reports by both the Republic of Ireland (Eire) and Northern Ireland makes possible an examination of those population changes which occurred in Ireland during the past decade. In Northern Ireland, as in Great Britain, the enumeration was made on 23 April 1961; but in Eire the count took place a fortnight earlier. At the census date Northern Ireland had a population of 1,425,000, which was the highest recorded for the six north-eastern counties since 1851; in the Republic of Ireland there were 2,815,000 people, the smallest number ever enumerated at a census
