The eglwyseg limestone escarpment extends north from Castell Dinas Bran near Llangollen for nearly 5 miles to World's End, facing westwards but divided into a series of buttresses by deep gully dissection. It is frequently quoted as a type example for escarpments and screes but it differs markedly from the form and history of many others in Upland Britain (Wood, Holmes, Dury). It was therefore chosen for an investigation of slope form, and particularly scree, within the context ofthe denudation chronology. Fifty-six profiles were surveyed to elucidate the morphological form (Fig. 3), and of these seventeen refer to the two main scree localities (Fig. 2). The free-face is always composed of the White Limestone, and the scree, clitter and bed? rock slopes below are developed upon the Lower Grey and Brown Limestone. Varia? tions in lithology are therefore minimal on different parts ofthe slope. Methods and terminology.?Profiles were surveyed by Abney level, tape and ranging rods using the methods outlined by Savigear (1956). Scree counts were made on the lines of profile at random intervals, and sizes refer to the maximum dimensions of each of a sample of 100 pieces. The scree and slope type data are restricted to the main slope of the scarp below the lowest free-face, and the profiles are entirely limited to the limestone outcrop. The lower limit of profiles is that of loose debris which is the upper limit of enclosure
