The recent publication of the 'Green Paper', Energy Policy?a consultative document (Cmd. 7101, 1978) affords a valuable insight into official attitudes to? wards the future of the British energy market. The present paper challenges some of the energy supply and demand forecasts that are presented in the Working Document; in particular, it questions the optimistic market forecasts that continue to dominate official thinking about the coal industry; and it concludes with the proposal that an alternative strategy is required for the British coal industry, one that involves quite painful choices of an economic, geo? graphical, social and environmental nature
