The historical study of material culture already has a long road. In the history of science particularly, material culture gained visibility from the mid-1980’s under the influence of the book “Leviathan and the Air Pump” by Simon Schaffer and Steven Shapin who put the object at the center of their investigations. The study and discussion of material culture are now present in various fields (archeology, sociology, anthropology, history) that focus on different objects (books, tapestry, ruins and scientific instruments) in different approaches. This article intends to discuss the scope and limits of the historiography of sciences from the material culture, presenting and discussing the theoretical and methodological proposals that have emerged in recent years
