This article examines the early history of anarchism and revolutionary syndicalism in South Africa, a colonial society that industrialised in the late nineteenth century, and in the surrounding southern African region. South Africa was characterised at the time by a militant (but nationally and racially divided) union movement, and by the pervasive national oppression of people of colour, the majority. Opposed to national oppression and segregation, yet critical of African and Coloured nationalism, the anarchists and revolutionary syndicalists developed an increasingly sophisticated analysis of national oppression, recruited and trained a multi-racial cadre, formed pioneering general and revolutionary syndicalist unions amongst people of colour, and continued to influence regional labour, white and black, and the left, generally, after the formation of the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA) in 1921
