Representativite, sociability and power in four Swiss and French municipalities This comparative study of the government of two Swiss and two French communes (1977-1989) shows the impact of urban changes on the operations of political-administrative institutions, the local political processes and the emergence of new urban elites. The study focuses on the comparison of two key groups, « municipals » in Switzerland and deputy mayors in France. It highlights the different responses which the four towns worked out to deal with the growing complexity of urban problems : redundancy, collegiality and consensus in Switzerland, redundancy, differentiation and authoritarianism in France
