IN THE SPRING of I940 a door-to-door canvass was made in Franklin, Indiana, to determine the organizational affiliation of the adult section of the population. Schedules were obtained covering i90 households including I39 men and I87 women in the income class receiving less than $ioo per month, and i95 households including i90 men and i92 women in the income class receiving $io0 per month or more, making a total of 708 individuals in all. Questions were asked concerning the formal and semiformal groups to which the men and women who were family heads belonged, the holding of offices or committee chairmanships, and in the case of some groups the regularity of attendance. The difference between the organizational habits of the two segments of the population was striking
