T HE ANALYSIS by M. J. Herskovits of the methodology employed by E. F. Frazier in conducting his field research in Bahia, Brazil,' and the response to this critique by Frazier,2 bring into focus a problem of interest to students of sociological questions in that region. The present discussion has to do with the nature of the unions formed when a man and woman live amaziado, and the reasons for the frequency of such unions, some of a more or less casual nature, others manifesting stability and long duration. In this type of mating, at least insofar as it has been possible to observe,3 the woman must be faithful to her mate (amazio) and must discharge her domestic duties; the. man has the obligation to support and direct the household, caring for the woman and the children.4 In such matings, however, the requirement of virginity or, at least, of not having indulged in earlier promiscuous sexual intercourse is not exacted to the extent this is true in the case of matrimony (legal marriage). In this study, the following will be attempted: i) to determine whether or not the distinction which Frazier makes for Bahia between being and living maritalmente exists in Recife; and 2) to analyze the composition of working-class families of that city, particularly as regards the light such an analysis can throw on the amaziado relationship.
