The relationship between marital breakdown and socioeconomic status in the United Kingdom is examined using a variety of official sources of data including censuses and surveys. The results lead the author to question previous studies concerning differences between the risk of divorce among nonmanual and skilled manual classes. The author concludes that census occupation-based estimates are a useful source of information on the propensity for marital breakdown. Such data indicate strong links among divorce suicide and alcohol-related mortality. (ANNOTATION
