Such studies examine those who occupy positions at the tops of hierarchies or who are leading members of professional groupings. They outline the elite members' general and specialized education and their family backgrounds, usually expressed in terms of the father's occupations. Other details may relate to their career patterns, the time taken to reach their present position (analysed against educational and social backgrounds) and the ages of members of the elite. The value of these elite studies is not in question. They form iseful case studies in the broader discussions of social mobility3 and they throw some light on studies of professions and professionalization. Outside the sphere of academic research, the interest has often been more polemical. The facts are stated with the implicit or explicit suggestion that they should be otherwise. If the educational and family background of occupants of elite positions be unrepresentative this is criticized as being undemocratic, or it is argued that this unrepresentativeness is a hindrance to the organization in trying to attain its ultimate objectives. Again, in terms of our present interest, we can see this latter question
