Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the place of health promotion in the remaining quilombo communities of Kalunga, Goiás, Brazil. Methods: It is action research with a qualitative approach, developed with quilombola leaders, social control, managers and workers from the Unified Health System (SUS) in the municipalities of Monte Alegre de Goiás, Teresina de Goiás and Cavalcante. Between November 17 and 25, 2021, 15 individual interviews and six collective interviews were conducted, with the participation of 35 individuals. Participant observation was also carried out and recorded in a field diary. Results: The content analysis pointed to the theoretical inconsistencies in the concept of health promotion, the absence of public policies for health equity in the quilombola territory and the inability of the state to address the social determinants of health that interfere in the health-disease-care process of the remaining quilombola communities. The research also identified the knowledge and practices of quilombola workers, managers and leaders in line with the health promotion framework. It is noteworthy that health inequalities are addressed by quilombola leaders and communities themselves, and that traditional knowledge serves as a tool to promote health in the territory. Conclusion: The importance of participatory health planning in quilombola communities is highlighted, as well as the need to strengthen intersectoral partnerships to achieve equity, social justice and well-being
