Victoriano Lorenzo was the only Panamanian general executed for his role in Colombia’s Thousand Days War (1899–1902). Sometimes termed a “cholo guerrillero”, Lorenzo led Indigenous peoples into battle in alliance with the liberals against the conservatives who had taken power in Colombia. Lorenzo’s actions provide an example of the complicated relationships that Indigenous leaders sought to negotiate with liberals in Latin America at the turn of the twentieth century. Observers have long debated whether a political ideology motivated Lorenzo’s involvement with the liberals, and whether he can best be understood as a caudillo, nationalist, or socialist. An examination of his attitudes toward ethnic identities and women’s involvement in his struggle reveals that the actions of marginalized peoples were a primary factor that informed his political engagement.
