Tony Shaw and Denise J. Youngblood have written the first full-length history of American and Soviet cinemas’ important role in waging the Cold War through the overt and subtle exposure of the major antagonists’ strengths and weaknesses. Cinematic Cold War provides a lucid exploration of an expanded cultural history rooted in strongly held ideologies on both sides of the diplomatic divide. The result is a well-executed analysis of the domestic Cold War that includes the assumptions that prevailed in each camp. The authors present a useful introduction to their topic and methodology that prepares readers for a close reading of the celluloid sources. Two richly detailed chapters explore the cultural and political context for Soviet and American cinemas. The Cold War conflict produced a Hollywood film industry that was intent on the export of American values and a Soviet filmmaking establishment that struggled to defend communist ideals. The vehicle for this analysis is a comparative examination of selected American and Soviet films from distinct periods in the evolution of the postwar discourse
