Christopher Bigsby is probably the most widely respected critic of American drama today. He is the co-editor of the Cambridge History of American Theatre (3 vols., 1998–2006), and his prolific critical works span the arc of modern American drama from Susan Glaspell and Eugene O’Neill to Tony Kushner and Neil LaBute. Bigsby is most closely associated with Arthur Miller, with whom he had a close working relationship and friendship for more than twenty years. He worked with Miller to produce a revised edition of The Portable Arthur Miller (2003) and interviewed Miller many times in preparation for his two major works on the dramatist, Arthur Miller: A Critical Study (2005) and a biography, of which this is the first volume. It is important to know the depth and breadth of Bigsby's knowledge of both Miller and the American theater to fully appreciate the contribution that he makes with this biography. It is also important to know that, as founder of the Arthur Miller Centre for American Studies at the University of East Anglia, Bigsby is a scholar interested primarily in placing Miller's life and work in the context of American history and culture rather than in writing a personal biography or the history of the theater
