Around 1000 A.D., Cahokia, the largest Native American city constructed north of Mexico, was taking shape near the eastern banks of the Mississippi River in present-day Illinois. That the overwhelming majority of contemporary Americans are completely unfamiliar with the ancient city is a double tragedy. It is a failure on the part of the general public to recognize one of the most impressive elements of Native American history and a failure of archaeologists to engage audiences outside their profession. Timothy R. Pauketat's Cahokia seeks to remedy both of these issues by examining the present state of knowledge concerning Cahokia in a format that is both innovative and interesting to the wider public. Rather than reproducing the synthetic, linear narrativive usually found in works designed to disseminate scholarly research to wider, nonprofessional audiences, Pauketat's work is more experimental, presenting a series of hypothetical interpretations regarding Cahokia's development. The result is a provocative little book that presents many big ideas
