At the dawn of the twenty-first century, African American public intellectuals have taken on a more influential and visible role in our society. While numerous impressive works have been written on the subject of black intellectuals, Charles Pete Banner-Haley's book provides a noteworthy example of the kind of work still needed to connect generations of scholar-activists. Banner-Haley argues that the subject of race has occupied the thinking of most African American public intellectuals (p. 2). In a manner reflective of the work of the theologian Howard Thurman, Banner-Haley seeks to create a genealogy out of various strands of black public intellectual life; the study is “framed ... as a series of historical meditations on what it has meant to be an African American intellectual” (p. ix). Positing black intellectual life around the venerable figures of W. E. B. Du Bois and President Barack Obama, Banner-Haley argues that Obama “is an intellectual who has learned much from those who came before him” and that Du Bois's “genius and expansive mind laid the groundwork that all black intellectuals across the spectrum of ideology or disciplinary leanings must work through” (p. ix
