The last census round in Venezuela (2011) introduced new social identity categories based on notions of racial purity that relegated recognition of mestizo conceptions of personhood and nationality—heretofore pillars of statecraft. This article identifies domestic and international influences on the design of this census, showing the way in which the state has been ‘socialised’ in defining its statistical goals. Census results situated moreno/a as the category with a majority of self-ascriptions (49.9%). In this paper, these results will be analysed through the examination of notions of personhood and nationality as reflected in a variety of everyday forms of social categorisation
