The application of an empire analytic has revitalized the fields of British, French, and United States history and transformed our understanding of their objects of study. Much of this scholarship focuses on the many ways that empire abroad shaped the development of metropolitan imperial cultures and identities. “Metropolitan Cultures of Empire and the Long Moment of Decolonization” introduces a forum of three essays that chart new approaches to the topic. The essays reflect the growing interest in the final decades of colonial rule and three emerging themes within imperial studies, in particular: the history of emotions and affective politics of empire; the role of imperial metropoles as sites and organizers of anticolonial activity; and metropolitan manifestations and repercussions of decolonization on particular institutions. This introductory essay situates the essays within broader historiographical trends and highlights some lessons that they offer to historians of the metropolitan reverberations and afterlives of imperialism.
