This is a study of Katukina, a language of the Panoan Family spoken at the State of Acre, Brazil.The work is divided into two parts -a diacronic one and a syncronic one.In the first par!we discuss about the traditioual methododology used for classif'ying languages into families; the anthrotoponyms are questioned and a dífferent methodology for establishíng groups of languages ís proposed.In the second part, the syncronic one, some o f lhe theoretical resources o f Generative Grammar are used to account for the data at the phonologícal, morphologícal and syntactic leveis.The lexicographical levei is examíned too.The work includes also threl: appendíces, one of which ís a bilinguai (Katukina -Portuguese I Portuguese
