From the crisis of the Old Colonial System, many projects in order to build and consolidate the Brazilian nationality have been the object of attention, through the National State sphere and associated actions to allow new territorial occupations.This thesis seeks to understand the Brazilian project on national unification of its territories by the modernization of the communication system that would allow North of Minas Gerais region and some of its most important cities such as Diamantina, Serro Frio and Minas Novas, to have the best way to drain off their production.As an example of new territorial occupation is focused the country interior ("sertões") around Jequitinhonha and Mucuri riversThe broader national integration project was thought after creation of a new settlement, settled along the "Todos os Santos" river flanks: the Filadélfia city and from that place establish communication with major exporting ports through the Mucuri river with the Company's Trade and Navigation of Mucuri, led by Theophilo Benedicto Ottoni
