When has difference become a problem? When has the different become an object of intervention?Which was the first institution to take charge of the issue of difference?Do monotheistic religion and Nation-state present analogous models of combat against difference? These questions guide this thesis. In the first part, the analysis focuses in the modern administration of difference, based on three types of war: the war against the strangers (Zygmunt Bauman), the war against the abnormal (Michel Foucault), the war against the homini sacri (Giorgio Agamben). From the drama of these three wars, it"s possible to recognize the intimate solidarity between liberalism and racism, democracy and totalitarianism.Eugenics, genocide, assimilation, biopolitics and discipline made up the modern strategies to combat difference. Are they still the forms of difference"s administration in the contemporary society?Aiming to answer this question, this thesis takes as objects of study two social groups: 1) itinerant protestant preachers who transform their torn and violent biographies into a way of earning their living on the religious market of preaching; 2) Individuals originated from the peasantry who have been diagnosed as depressed ones.Suffering as a commodity, in the first case, suffering as shame, in the second case, reveal two new modalities of difference"s management. In both cases, the individuals are not subordinate to procedures of conversion, reform and domestication. In the new form of "governability" (Foucault, 2008), the plan of construction of a transparent, unified, limpid society is replaced by a game, in which the individuals do not have to be reformed or purged of their hateful difference, but administrated and leaded to a strange and tautological art of being what they already are.In our contemporary society, the individuals are no longer obligated to get rid of the irritant signs of their difference. On the contrary, they are doomed to their differences as an inescapable destine
