This is a study on conservative political thought among parliamentarians from the evangelical bench elected to the 1987-1988 National Constituent Assembly (NCA).The characterization of this political thought took place especially with the help of a software of qualitative document analysis, wherewith we investigated 270 minutes of the NCA's sessions and 613 minutes of meetings of the Thematic Commissions and Subcommittees, in which we identified 7,072 records of pronouncements from the 32 evangelical parliamentarians elected to that legislature. The first chapter details the political rise of evangelicals to the NCA, demonstrating how their expanded presence in the federal parliament reflected changes in the ideas defended by leaders of evangelical churches about political participation of believersnow seen as important to ensure good governance and submit it to divine authority. In chapters two, three and four, we see how the pronouncements of evangelical deputies reflect a political thought marked by three aspects that allow us to characterize it as conservative: the understanding of Christianity as a constitutive axis of the formation of Brazilian nationality; the association between freedom of enterprise and freedom of belief and religious initiative; the definition of the family as celula mater of society, and of morality as a guiding element of social life and nation. The fifth chapter analyzes the political thought of the "dissidents", evangelical parliamentarians with progressive ideas who distanced themselves from the evangelical bench and confronted their ideas
