Arturo Escobar nacio y crecio en Colombia. Se educo en la Universidad del Valle (Cali, Colombia), en la Cornell University y en la Universidad de California, en Berkeley (donde se doctoro en 1987). Entre sus especialidades figuran la ecologia politica y la antropologia del desarrollo, los movimientos sociales y las nuevas tecnologias. Es autor de Encountering Development: the Making and Unmaking of the Third World (1995).
