The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago is part of a circuit of large industrial international exhibitions, commonly known as International Exhibitions, World Fairs, or Universal Expositions. This study stems from the premise that such exhibitions helped build a "culture of modernity" that allowed, among other processes, the rise of new cultural models that guide the creation of new urban imaginaries. We focus on the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago to investigate its role as a vector of ideas and images, representations, practices, and attitudes towards modern urban life. These would reverberate to Latin American cities, particularly to São Paulo at the turn of the 20th century and throughout the first decades of that century. Our central hypothesis is that the adoption of the North American imagery about the metropolis thrived in the fertile ground of what we call São Paulo's Yankeeism (or "yankismo" ): a feeling of idealization and admiration for the United States that radiates to the most diverse forms of representation, including the shaping of ideas about the city.We argue, therefore, that it was during the transit of ideas promoted by the World's fair that Chicago emerged not only as a model of a built city but as an imagined city that would serve as a reference to shape the future of the capital of São Paulo
