This dissertation aims to analyze the reception of Greco-Roman Antiquity in the Western legal thought, in order to demonstrate how the evolution of classical philology framed the perspective of legal philosophers and historians on ancient law.The first chapter describes the reception of ancient law in Europe and its subsidiary centers from the end of Antiquity to the dawn of classical philology as a modern science. The second chapter presents the consolidation of classical philology and legal science as disciplines engaged in the shaping of German nationality in the 19 th century. At the end of this chapter, a description of two opposed philological approaches is proposed, an orthodox and an heterodox approach, based on the philological debate between Ulrich von Wilamowitz and Friedrich Nietzche.Such polarization will frame how Western Antiquity is understood in the 20 th century, later influencing the study of ancient law.The third and fourth chapters deal respectively with orthodox and heterodox receptions, in order to depict the main approaches to Antiquity according to the philological affiliation of each jurist discussed
