The concept of dualism left its mark on the overall understanding of the phenomenon of underdevelopment in the second half of the twentieth century, both in Development Economics, as well as in the overall latin american economic debate.The present thesis investigates the debates and distinct formulations around this concept -going from W. Arthur Lewis to the marxist critics, passing through the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the "Escola de Campinas" -, as well as the formulations around the possibilities of overcoming "dualism", and consequently underdevelopment
