This research investigates the relationship between social reality and literary transfiguration in five comedies by Ariano Suassuna, Auto da Compadecida (1955), O Casamento Suspeitoso (1957), O Santo e a Porca (1957), A Pena e a Lei (1959) and Farsa da Boa Preguiça (1960), through the study of the construction of the characters and their dramatic conflicts, the time of actions and scenic spaces. In this investigation, the forms used for literary reconstruction of elements of the historical, political and social context of the northeastern sertão and the author's personal experiences are described, analyzed and interpreted. In the comedies, the sertanejo world and man are presented in their specificities, but they are also related to deeper and more universal human questions.Social criticism is present, but it does not hide the humour, colors, rhythm, cleverness, ingenuity and faith of the men of the sertão, approached in their variations of social class, gender and personal values. In addition to materializing aspects of social life, the plays bring elements from diverse cultural matrices, such as classical, iberian and christian sources, both erudite and popular. The construction of comic laughter is done through the approximation of contrary elements, which achieve harmonious coexistence and functionality, resulting in well-finished works with internal coherence.Man's life in society is presented as limited in time and space, whose problems are only overcome when metaphysical and universal values are considered. Thus, social reality is more than a pretext for literary creation -it determines and explains the aesthetic values present in the structure of the plays
