This dissertation aimed to study the development of the tax system in Brazil, showing that its formation and current form are directly related to income inequality. We hypothesize the perception that the structure of taxation in Brazil acts not only legitimizing and increasing income inequality, but also reiterating the unbridled accumulation of a specific portion of the population: the portion of the richest. This taxation format and the increase in inequality not only contribute to but legitimize the deepening of wealth of the richest sections of the population, since high incomes are strategically and precariously taxed in Brazil. In this sense, we seek to show, throughout the text, that those who earn more contribute proportionately less than the poor and middle-income groups
