This piece identifies, qualifies and analyses the tourist railways in Brazil and Argentina through four case studies: two in Brazilthe Viação Férrea Campinas-Jaguariúna and the Serra Verde Express -and two in Argentina -the Tren de la Costa and the Viejo Expreso Patagónico. Its main objective is to understand how these tourist railways can contribute to the railway heritage preservation. Thus, a concept of "tourist railways" is developed based on tourism, cultural heritage and railways issues of both countries. To substantiate these considerations, this essay also presents a discussion about the present phase of the urbanization process, leading to an understanding of the correlation between tourism and cultural heritage for urban management in the globalization scenario
