The research invesXgates the reasons for the emergence and urban growth of Santos, from the arrival of MarXm Afonso de Souza's expediXon in 1532 to the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759, highlighXng the influence of the Portuguese urban tradiXon and possible indigenous interacXons that slowly established characterisXcs distant from the "hill urbanism" paradigm.Divided into four interconnected themes -Paradise, Landscape, Establishment, and Sacred -the analysis explores the reasons for choosing the occupaXon of the southeast coast, the challenges in exploring the territory, the decisive role of the Church in urban for-maXon, and invesXgates the uniformity in colonial urbanism.The evident flexibility and adaptability in the urban landscape of Santos stand out through the dynamic interacXon between religious temples and the city layout, creaXng a unique intersecXon between the sacred and the profane.This dynamic reveals the influence that temples exerted on urban configuraXon, adding a layer of complexity to the city's morphology.Delving into the intricate layers of Santos' history, the research underscores the lack of reliable documentary sources and the absence of clear records regarding the origin and urban trajectory of this town, one of the first founded in the colony.The need for updaXng and rigor in historical debates is evident, due to gaps and contradicXons exisXng in tradiXo
