Con il termine devotio si indica propriamente il rito della religione romana mediante il quale durante una battaglia il generale poteva votare se stesso o un legionario del proprio esercito agli dèi inferi (cosiddetta devotio ducis, strettamente collegata ai Decii Mures), oppure fare lo stesso con una città appena conquistata e privata delle sue divinità tutelari (devotio hostium). Destinatarie del rito sono in entrambi i casi le divinità infere, soprattutto i Mani e Tellus : nella devotio è infatti fortemente esaltato il legame con la terra. Il rito va distinto dalla defixio. Il termine con il tempo muterà di significato fino ad assumere la moderna valenza di « devozione ». In questo articolo vorrei apportare degli argomenti a favore della verosimiglianza di tale rito come tramandato delle fonti, o almeno di alcune delle caratteristiche che lo compongono, piuttosto che considerarlo un mero espediente narrativo o una « costruzione » storiografica
