Le comportement est un concept très usité dans le monde scientifique sans être pour autant bien défini. Son importance a varié au cours de l'histoire de la psychologie. Après avoir été dominant, il est aujourd'hui supplanté par d'autres concepts. Dans les études sur les émotions et la cognition, de la perception jusqu'à l'action, il occupe aujourd'hui un statut ambigu. Pour la psychologie comme pour d'autres disciplines qui intègrent dans leurs modèles les caractéristiques du comportement humain, il est devenu nécessaire de préciser sa définition. Après une rétrospective qui inclut la confrontation avec les concepts cognitivistes, la proposition est faite d'aborder le comportement sous l'angle du paradigme de la complexité. Cette approche est actuellement appliquée à d'autres secteurs de la psychologie comme l'étude de la perception, des organisations sociales, de la personnalité du développement et peut s'avérer utile pour envisager de conceptualiser le comportement
