The present work develops an analysis on a particular moment in the history of the Brazilian Social Sciences, concerning relationships between the Brazilian Marxism of the Paulista Sociological School and the Amazon.The guiding hypothesis of this study understand the Amazon as a heuristic element for the sociological investigation that is involved with the theme of the region, nation and globalization.The methodological assumption, derived from this hypothesis, is that the Amazon is a social, cultural, economic and historical artifact from which national society and more contemporaneously, world society can be explained.The nation and the world are projected into the Amazon, transforming it into the object of interventions that serve the interests of capital but, at the same time, it is objected to by Amazon.The region projects itself in the most embracing society deconstructing old stereotypes and prejudices, disturbing the conceptual and categorical references that intend to explain it
