The subject matter of this dissertation is the reconstruction of the Jesuit architectural ensemble of Pátio do Colégio, whose construction works, required since the 1940s, began in 1954 and lasted until 1979.During this time frame the reconstruction was the target of polemic and controversies of different degrees, mainly observed in the debates that took place at the level of state and municipal authorities and in the contemporary press.Addressing these controversies, identifying and qualifying the social agents participating in the process -both the advocates of the reconstruction and its criticsand the tenor of their arguments are the goals of this dissertation, which also involve scrutinizing the social functions and values imputed to the reconstruction by the agents that caused it to happen
