The links between poetical and visual images are discussed here as the graphic work of René Magritte is analysed through his illustrations for Lautréamont's The Maldoror Chants published in 1948, by Editions La Boétie, Paris.Dividing the illustrations in three main groups, this study searched initially for ellucidative patterns of the visual signs in comparison with the verbal ones. The three main groups are presented as vignettes, capital letters, and full plate engravings. The research leads not only to a poetical convergence point between the writer and the fine artist, but also -and probably the most appealling partto the difference, the confrontation, and the divergent points between them
