This paper examines the impact, in Portugal and Spain, of the studies on comparative household structure undertaken by the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure and its collaborators. It concludes that the underlying assumptions of the Cambridge typology, which took the English case as an implicit standard for comparison, proved inappropriate in an Iberian context and acted, indirectly, as a stimulus for the development of alternative aproaches
