In this study, we investigate the reading of Amerindian otherness in the works of André Thevet and Jean de Léry taking into account the intersection between their experiences in France Antarctique (1555-1560) and the political and religious setting of France in the second half of the sixteenth century. We seek to understand the developments of the Wars of Religion (1562-1598) to build a memory of France Antarctique. In this process, both authors perform religious translations of Tupinambás' customs, rituals and myths which contribute to the reduction of the New to the Old World and, more specifically, to the insertion of an indigenous humanity into World History.Thereafter, we evaluate the theological-political effects of Thevet's and Lery's divergent versions of the origin of the indigenous people, on the one side, and of the historical sense of the discovery of the West Indies, on the other
