The Pastoral Land Commission (CPT) was founded in 1975.In the face of evidences of conflicts by the modernization of agriculture in Brazil, CPT support rural workers in pursuit of their rights and land. But in this history, especially in the 70's and 80's, rarely practiced reflections on environmental issues, which occurred more frequently only from the 90's.This PhD research used the methodology of Environmental History and Political Ecology to investigate the consequences of the CPT's discussions about environmental sustainability between 1975 and 2015.We intend to evaluate how the "input" of these discussions may have immediate and long-term consequences, predictable and unpredictable.First, documental research was carried out based on the CPT's digitized collection, the Relatórios de Conflitos no Campo and the Jornal Pastoral da Terra. Then, content analysis was performed from the construction of a database in the Microsoft Access, based on a priori categories. The research concluded that the Pastoral Land Commission incorporated the environmental issue in its internal discussions and practices. This incorporation, however, took place only after reflection on various social experiences that the group dealt with daily. The main agenda, Agrarian Reform, has not, to any extent, been replaced by the environmental issue; on the contrary, there was a potentiation of alternatives based on an Agrarian Reform that included the discussion on the environment. Finally, there was a reinterpretation of sustainable development based on an "eco-ecological" alternative
