This dissertation analyzes the way in which the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which occurred after the end of the First World War, is presented thematically and formally in the novel Spiel im Morgengrauen , by Arthur Schnitzler, published in 1927.To do so, we consider the role of militarism when composing the personality of the protagonist, Lieutenant Willi Kasda, highlighting the role of the army as an important symbolic element in the maintenance of the Ancien Régime during the 19th century. Then, we analyze the form of the narrative, constructed based on the mix between the free indirect speech and the indirect interior monologue that provides the access to the protagonist's thoughts. We show how this technique is commonly found in the works by the author, known for giving voice to layers prior to the consciousness of the characters.Next, we briefly reconstruct the historical events of the second half of the 19th century in that country, showing that, unlike other places in Western Europe, the bourgeoisie did not establish itself as a hegemonic class, remaining in the shadow of the nobility. This phenomenon had consequences in the culture as seen, for example, in the "anti-capitalism" perceptible in most of the works of art of the Empire and the distrust of the bourgeois rationality and "self".We highlight how Schnitzler elaborates a critique of the code of conduct based on honor from his first plays. So, we regain the way in which this concept, even going through transformations of meaning, was thematized in the literary tradition of the German language. The author, in the work Leutnant Gustl , published in 1900, revisits the theme in a novel known for its direct interior monologue, therefore a criticism of the aristocratic/military ways, structured in a literary form born from the crisis of the narrative schemes of the bourgeoisie. Finally, we return to Spiel im Morgengrauen to demonstrate how the same theme has a different development in this late work.In it, we already find financial elements that break with the "anti-capitalism" of the Austrian tradition and characters belonging to the business world -Schnabel and Leopoldine -, who end up accelerating the protagonist's path towards destruction. Finally, we point out the way in which the theme of the game symbolizes contingency as a regulatory element of life, in a scenario in which neither aristocratic honor nor bourgeois morality can serve as an ethical compass
