This research attests to an ethnolinguistic study focusing on the variety of vernacular Portuguese spoken by indigenous people of the Guamá river. The investigation was centered in the villages Sede, Itwaçu, Ita Puty'r, Frasqueira, Pinawa and São Pedro, located in the municipality of Santa Luzia do Para, in the Alto Guamá Indigenous Land. The main research results presented in this thesis were based on: (i) the capture of a spontaneous speech corpus through recordings made in the villages; (ii) corpus transcription; (iii) the organization of a database of this variety of Portuguese. It is argued in this thesis that the tembé people of the Guamá river have already consolidated the language shift process from Tembé/Tenetehar to Portuguese. This hypothesis was guided by a study of the ethnolinguistic situatuon of this indigenous group as well as by a description and some analysis, although not exhaustive, of phenomena of this variety of rural Portuguese. It is also proposed that the Portuguese language variety spoken by the Guamá river tembé people can be classified in the subdivision of rural Portuguese varieties called afro-indigenous Portuguese
