This essay is about prison, about the fall and the disappearance; it is about the gray area between mourning and melancholy. This work studies the book Inventory of scars [Inventário de cicatrizes] written by ex-prisoner Alex Polari (1978).In it, the poet writes about practices of violence associated with the repressive system, inventorying personal and collective losses, and tracing the fate of marked lives, turned to ashes. If certain historical and generational experiences interdict the work of mourning, Alex Polari's poetic writing allows us to glimpse how mourning, dreams and actions tie a knot, operating a subjectivation of loss
