The understanding of space in visual arts is approached from diverse perspectives in contemporary discussions, which can range from the study of the formal and aesthetic properties related to the positioning of a work within physicality to the production of meaning resulting from the presence of viewers in the exhibition context. In some cases, the perception of the space is subject to the social markers related to the artists, or even to the visibility of certain languages within the artistic field. In this dissertation, I address the space related to the experimental environment of young women artists in the 1970s, particularly in what it provides and stimulates the beginning of their artistic journeys.Through the use of new media and languages of the period, such as video and performance, these artists occupy spaces that are still under development, inventing possibilities for engaging with their political and social contexts. My focus will be particularly on the works of Joan Jonas and Regina Vater, one American and the other Brazilian, in comparison with other visual works. My hypothesis is that, as these artists transform everyday spaces -streets, beaches, squares, and their own homes -into spaces for work and artistic production, they challenge the modern division between the public and private spheres, as well as social constructions of gender
