This thesis has the overall goal of analyzing the socio-spatial organization of Alagoas, since its territorial formation until 1988.The analysis is focused in the shifts of the urban network and the urban centrality as a material expression of the transformations occurred in the productive structure of the state. To complete this research, we have used the historical structural method, and a great review of the local economic literature, taking into consideration the international and national changes in the pattern of accumulation. The databases from the IBGE, IPEA, SUDENE, BNB and a number of census of diverse natures were used to assess this work.We have concluded that while there was a greater distribution of the farming fields and the economic activities between cattle raising, cotton and sugarcane, it resulted in decentralization of the urban network, in terms of people, services and economic activity; whereas when the land-based sugarcane crop started to grow and became the predominant culture, the urban network became centralized in the capital city, Maceió.This centralization was helped by the progress of public services and the job offer in the city, and also by the creation of SALGEMA and PCA, which attracted a number of immigrants to the city.Arapiraca is another city that, through the expansion of the smoke production, also grew and concentrated the urban population of Alagoas in the last 30 years of the 20th century
