This research aims at investigating the possible implications of the relation between first and second languages (L1 and L2 respectively) in the process of identity formation of educators and students in Brazilian Portuguese-English bilingual schools.Given the assumption that most bilingual education programs rest on a "monoglossic language ideology" (GARCÍA, 2009), which presumes a strict separation of L1 and L2 in the learning process, we intend to understand the meanings which serve as the basis for such a view in order to question them. Therefore, we have attempted to map out the spread of monoglossic discourses, relating them to ideological and unconscious practices by means of a discussion on the notions of identity, subjectivity, language and teaching. Thus, we draw upon the Discourse Analysis framework proposed by Michel Pêcheux ([1983
