Considering the recent movement that advocates for self-representation in performing arts, this dissertation addresses the ethical, aesthetic, political and social implications that emerge from the representation of social minorities in theater.Looking at the issue of representativeness from the perspective of the absence, we will initially focus on the criticism received by the play Entrevista com Stela do Patrocínio, for bringing a white female actor representing a black woman.Recalling this event, we will reflect on some ways in which the black body is perceived in the Brazilian society and in the contemporary theater.Afterwards, looking at the representation from the perspective of the presence, we will discuss the work of Cia.Marginal, a theater group founded in 2005 in the Complexo of Favelas of Maré, in Rio de Janeiro.Formed mostly by young, black and favela resident actors, the company decides, in 2019, to investigate Angolan immigration within the favela and invites six Angolan artists to integrate the creating process and act in their latest work: the play Hoje não saio daqui.Addressing ways in which these bodiesblacks, LGBT, favela residents, immigrantsperform in the scene, we will discuss how the presence of nonhegemonic bodies can be understood as a vector capable of summoning and reorganizing dramatic, performative, ethical, social and territorial layers. Finally, the study concludes with propositions for artists who aim to create in a representative and emancipatory way.It also brings a theoretical discussion on how the concept of representativeness operates within the art world, combining ethical, legal, political and aesthetic aspects
