Discourse Analysis and Applied Linguistics

Discourse analysis and applied linguistics is the essence of this article. Since their initial convergence in the 1970s, the relationship of discourse analysis and applied linguistics has been a fluid and multifaceted one, driven by a variety of theoretical perspectives across an increasingly diverse range of contexts. From its initial-and still largely central-focus on second language learning, applied linguistics is now more widely seen as relevant to any real-world, language-related problem that an interdisciplinary, as opposed to purely linguistic, approach can address. This article focuses on some of the varied contexts and strands of discourse analysis methodology as they have developed in applied linguistics. Discourse analysis initially converged with second language concerns in relation to a variety of subfields in applied linguistics, especially, communicative language teaching. Conversion analysis in applied linguistics is explained in details. The idea of language socialization followed by a discussion on spoken discourse concludes this article
