La maison urbaine, cadre de production du statut et du genre à Anjouan (Comores), XVIIe-XIXe siècles

Au sein des mondes swahili, les sociétés insulaires des Comores ont conservé, malgré l'adoption de l'islam, une règle de résidence conjugale matrilocale et même, pour deux d'entre elles, des groupes de filiation matrilinéaires. Ce n'est pas le cas à Anjouan où la filiation est indifférenciée. Dans cette île, l'intégration régulière dans les familles dominantes de marchands lettrés, membres des réseaux commerciaux maritimes de l'océan Indien, notamment de chérifs Bā ʿAlawī, a contribué à la formation d'une catégorie urbaine spécifique, les makabaila. La maison de pierre, emblématique de la culture urbaine swahili, a joué à Anjouan un rôle central dans les processus de distinction des makabaila et l'on peut suivre son évolution grâce à des sources européennes remontant au xviie siècle, croisées à l'histoire orale et à l'ethnographie. Les transformations de la maison éclairent l'historicité du travail de construction hiérarchique, dont l'un des instruments était la clôture croissante des femmes. Forme concrète de la relation conjugale, la maison appartient à la femme mais le mari en est le maître. Elle révèle l'articulation de deux perspectives alternes sur l'organisation sociale : une conception autochtone cognatique centrée sur le groupe de descendance, versus une conception patrilinéaire en réseau. Elle apparait donc comme le lieu de production conjointe du statut et du genre à Anjouan
