discusses the reception of Rubem Fonseca's fírst novel, O Caso Morei.I sketched the hypothesis that this book was not so different from Lúcia McCartney, which received a very good reception by the critics, different from what happened to O Caso Morei. This study examines if something has changed in the criticism or in autofs style, or if both has changed, and to what extent. It is necessary to consider a common aspect for both books: the mass culture. This dissertation doesn't reach all of its fínalities. The paper followed the changing of society and criticism attitude related to mass culture and, as a consequence, to Rubem Fonseca's works.Initially, there was an appreciation of mass culture as a component of social cohesion, related to "populismo".Later, this components was incorporated in high culture. Finally, there was a distrust against mass culture products. This path can be noticed focusing the incorporation of mass culture components in Rubem Fonseca's books and the criticism evaluation on these books. In his fírst two books, the author shows a new modem ethic, but without coping to the model of this ethichis theme is basically the backwardness versus the modemization. The critics acclaimmed him as someone who renewed the genre "short story".In Lúcia McCartney, Rubem Fonseca adopted elements of mass culture to discuss this new reality. In this case, the criticism was surprised by the author's radical experience.Comparatively, O Caso Morei presents the same elements as Lúcia McCartney, but it received a less enthusiastic reception
